What is child & adolescent counselling
Counselling for Children and Adolescents is a safe and comforting space for the young person to express, explore and learn. The counsellor's focus is on the young person and the parents/ caregivers to help the child/ adolescent cope with the challenges they face, learn new skills, adapt better to their challenges and grow through it to be more fully themselves. The counsellor typically also works with the parents/ family to help them care for their child/ adolescent.
What happens in child counselling sessions
For children, especially those below 14 years of age, the counsellor's focus is to first try and work with the parents and caregivers. We usually ask to meet the parents/ caregivers first to explain the process to the clients, with a specific focus on how the parents/ caregivers will be part of the process while also protecting the child's confidentiality. The assessment process focuses on a detailed history of the child and the system the child is a part of, and particular concerns and immediate triggers that they feel concerned about for their child Child/ Adolescent Counselling involves a lot more play, art and other non-verbal counselling methods, especially where the child may not have the verbal skills required to express fully and participate in a cognitive exercise. The play techniques help the child express their feelings and wishes/ desires, and allow for a therapeutic interaction. There is also a greater element of coaching and skill education in working with children/ adolescents. If any assessment is indicated, we will refer out as needed.
What are the outcomes of counselling for children
By exploring themselves and their lives in a safe space, children are able to access a larger pool of resources, recognize new strengths, learn new skills and grow.
